Our health is headquartered in our belly

The human microbiome, an ecosystem of over 100 trillion microbes living in and on us, is among the hottest topics in medicine and health science today. Microbial DNA within us outnumbers human DNA hundred fold - making us more microbe than human!

Microbes are everywhere. Through the air we breathe, the food we eat and the things we touch, we are always connected to the microbial world. Coexisting with microbes has always been a part of our evolutionary story.

The largest and most complex microbiome is in our belly and it affects almost all metabolic activities from digestion, nerve health, hormones, immunity, sleep to our mental clarity and moods.

The mind belly connection

The belly microbiome and its metabolites allow an ongoing two-way communication between the Central Nervous System (brain) and the Enteric Nervous System (belly). This is why our belly is often called the ‘second brain’. The Vagus nerve, the longest nerve in the human body, literally connects our brain to our belly.

Most chronic illnesses today are linked directly or indirectly to gut dysbiosis caused by disruptions in our belly microbiome. Neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine as well as hormones like melatonin are all produced by microbes in our belly. These play a crucial role in regulating our sleep, mood, energy levels and general well being. The more we understand the microbiome, the more we discover our deep and ancient relationship - stretching back to the start of our evolutionary journey!

The lightness of being

We try to be mindful about every aspect of our service. From our commitment to bringing well being to the communities we serve to treading lightly with our carbon footprint on the planet.

That is why we only make health foods with a long and revered history within their local culture. Superfoods which have stood the test of time.

We use organically produced raw ingredients and buy as much as we can locally through small, organic biodynamic farms. This ensures our raw ingredients are free from antibiotics, pesticides and other chemicals used in large commercial farming operations; now linked to gut dysbiosis and other metabolic disorders.

We remain small and artisanal in our own production and distribution too. This keeps us free from using preservatives, stabilisers and other additives needed for extending the life and appearance of foods.

All of our packaging is 100% recyclable. We have recently developed a local subscription service which will allow us to reuse more and more packaging (with your support), as well as avoid waste from over production and excessive petrol miles.
